Wall. By the Wall, Cant. 1. is signified angelic protection - Therefore in the cave the wall dwells (the Church) which is surrounded on all sides by the protection of Angels. The same, in Cant. c. 2.

THE SOUL ACCORDING TO ITSELF.

Field. The man, who sows mustard seed in his field, is understood by many to be the Savior, who sows in the souls of Believers. St. Hieron. apud St. Thom. in Cat. aur. on Matth. c. 13. By the name of treasure we must spiritually understand the love of the heavenly homeland - the field, in which the hidden treasure is found, is us: if indeed the desire for the heavenly remains in us. Golden, silver vessel. In gold, & silver, and the garment of the Egyptians, is signified doctrines - or precious souls, as silver, & golden vessels, with their own bodies, which the garments signify. St. Isid. of Seville c. 16. in Exodus.

Hemp. Just as hemp, and the species of flax, is not suitable for the finest threads to be made from it, unless it is worked for a long time - so also the soul devoted to GOD, undergoing many temptations, is rendered purer for the spiritual work of humility. - For just as a newly made vessel, not tested by fire, is unsuitable for human uses: or just as an infant is inept at handling the things of the world - so also souls, if they have been made partakers of divine grace, while they are nourished by the sweetness of the Spirit, not yet tested by various temptations - are not yet suitable for the kingdom. Image of the Most Holy Trinity. Thus St. Thom. proves extensively in his work on love 16. otherwise 61. degree 10. The human mind is an unequal image of the Most Holy Trinity; but yet an image. Guest of the Body. You have a noble guest O flesh! very noble; & all your salvation depends on its health. Give honor to such a guest - attend diligently, what the presence of this guest bestows: for he it is, who grants sight to the eyes - Finally his departure proves, what his presence conferred: for immediately upon the soul departing the tongue will be silent - I ask you, what rustic person, if perhaps some noble and very powerful person wished to lodge with him, would not willingly lie down in a corner of his House, yielding the better place to your guest, as is worthy? say to your guest: for the Lord will remember you, and will restore you, to your former rank; and do you remember me.
