Twelve Patriarchs. Gen. 40. Twelve Springs. Exod. 15. Twelve Stones. Josh. 4. are a figure of the twelve Apostles. St. Chrysolog. f. 170.
Twelve Stones. Josh. 4. And JESUS took twelve stones, & placed them in the Jordan: from the Jordan itself he took another twelve, & fixed them in the places of the camps. Those twelve, which were sent into the Jordan, seem to me to have had the type of the Patriarchs: but those, which were lifted from the Jordan, to have had the figure of the Apostles - so, & in Psalm 4. we read: for fathers there have been born to thee sons. St. August. f. 130. de temp.
Twelve loaves of proposition signified the twelve Apostles, or their doctrine: Christ himself is also signified by the altar of holocausts. St. Thom. 12. q. 102. a. 4. ad 6.
Horses of the Lord, are called the Apostles. St. Thom. in Apoc. 8. O great struggle of rational horses! o wonderful mystery! A wheel within a wheel was running; the new Testament was in the old Testament. - They were running therefore (the Apostles) because he did not sleep, who had ascended the horses. St. Ambr. f. 4. in ps. 118.
The faces of Christ are fittingly understood to be the Apostles, who showed the form of doctrine to the peoples. Innocentius on Sacrifices l. 2. cap. 39.
Children of GOD. Although all Saints, & devout persons, are called children of GOD, more properly, & above all, the Apostles are called children of GOD. The reason is this: for divine filiation is communicated in man from the spiritual life, which is had through grace, & the presence of the Holy Spirit. St. Vinc. Ferr. on SS. Philip & James.
Children of Abraham. The stones which he spoke of, the Jews are understood - from whom he refuted the children of Abraham, that is, the Apostles. Arnobius c. 2. in Luke.
They are children of those cast out, that is, of the Prophets; who have been placed in the hand of the powerful GOD, & like an arrow shot forth have arrived even to the ends of the earth. St. Isid. c. 31. in Gen.
The sons of Job went about to enjoy banquets through the houses, when the Apostles as preachers were distributing the feasts of virtues to the listeners, as if to those eating. St. Greg. l. 1. mor. c. 19.
Brothers of Christ, both by the assumed nature, & by the grace of the Vocation to the Apostolate. St. Thom. in ps. 21.
Giants. This Apostolic choir truly puts on a breastplate for itself like a Giant to take vengeance on the nations. St. Bernard f. 3. in Pent.
The steps of the Church are the swift preachings of the Apostles; through which the Gospel has sounded in all the earth. St. Thom. in cap. 3. Cant.
Twelfth hour. The twelve hours of this day (of Christ) are the twelve Apostles. Did I not choose you twelve? John 7. St. Thom. in 11. John lect. 2.
Mountains. Behold on the last day this mountain the son of this Virgin is prepared on the top of the mountains, that is, he is elevated above our Apostles. St. Ildefonsus book on the Virginity of the B. V. c. 4. & 6. Let them flee to the mountains, that is, the doctrine of the Apostles. Arnobius c. 26. in Matth. The mountains are the Apostles; who are deservedly called mountains of virtues. St. Thom. in c. 3. Cant. The mountains were translated into the heart of the sea. Ps. 45., when the preaching Apostles being repelled from the perfidy of Judea came to the understanding of the gentiles. St. Greg. mor. l. 9. c. 2. Touch the mountains & they will smoke; not with smoke, from a lime kiln, but with the smoke of doctrines, & preachings. St. Vinc. Ferr. f. 2. on the Most Holy Trinity.
Sailors. We having the Church for a ship, the cross for a rudder, Christ for a pilot, the Father for the prow, the Spirit for the wind, & grace for the sail, the Apostles for sailors, the Prophets for the navigators, the old & new Testament for the sea; let us commit ourselves to the depth of the sea, to search out the hidden pearl in the Divine Scriptures. Not Men. By men do not understand the Apostles: because the Apostles are never called so. St. Thom. in 11. John.
They are clouds. St. Aug. Preface to 2. Expos. of ps. 29. They are called clouds for this reason: because watering the earth with the inundation of their speech, they taught it to make the fruit of faith for GOD. Arnob. in ps. 35. The Apostles are called clouds 1. on account of the fertility of the earth, namely from rain. Job. 37. The grain desires the clouds. 2. On account of the diffusion of light. Job. 37. Which enlighten all things, etc. 3. On account of the fulfillment of the Divine Will. Job. 37. Whatever the Will, etc. St. Thom. in ps. 60.
The eyes of Christ are the Apostles; who provide light with knowledge to the whole body of the Church. St. Isid. Comm. c. 11. in 13. Levit.
Works of the fingers. Mystically the Apostles - the works of the fingers (they designate) three fingers three persons; as if he says the works of the whole Trinity, or of the Holy Spirit. St. Thom. in ps. 8.
The Mouth of Christ whose (Christ's) Mouth the Apostles are rightly called. Rupert. Abb. Tuit. on divine office l. 8. c. 12.
The bones of the Church are the Apostles. St. Aug. Expof. 1. in ps. 21.
Sheep he calls the disciples, as if innocent, & as if without malice. Theophilactus apud St. Thom. in Cat. on 14. Mark.
Patriarchs. The Apostles are signified in the Patriarchs. St. Thom. f. in Conv. of St. Paul.
Fathers. The children of the primitive Church are the Apostles. They are said to be children born to the Church, on account of the doctrine of Christ her Spouse, & others through the doctrine of the Apostles, & others the children of other preachers. And indeed it is not inconvenient, that the same ones are children & fathers: because the Apostles
