Inquisitors Ecclesiastical officials charged with the protection of orthodoxy and the censorship of books. and local Ordinaries The local authorities of the Church, usually Bishops, who have ordinary jurisdiction over a diocese. shall not grant permission for printing until they have diligently compared the Breviary, both before and after its printing, with this very official copy published by our authority, and have found that nothing has been added or taken away. In the license itself—a copy of which must always be added at the beginning or the end of every printed Breviary—they must state in their own handwriting that this complete comparison was made and that conformity was found between the two Breviaries.
Failure to do so will result in the following penalties: for Inquisitors, the loss of their offices and future ineligibility for them; for local Ordinaries, suspension from divine services and an interdict from entering a church; and for their Vicars Deputies or representatives of the Bishop., the loss of their offices and benefits, future ineligibility, and an excommunication A formal exclusion from the sacramental life of the Church and its community. to be incurred automatically without further declaration.
Under these same prohibitions and penalties, we intend and wish to include all those works derived from the Roman Breviary, whether in part or in whole, such as Missals The book containing the prayers and instructions for the celebration of the Mass., Diurnals Books containing the daytime prayers of the Divine Office., Little Offices of the Blessed Virgin, Holy Week Offices, and other works of that kind. These may not be printed hereafter unless they, and each one of them, have first been printed in the aforementioned Printing House The Apostolic Typography mentioned on the previous page. by the same Andrea Andrea Brogiotto, the printer., so that they may agree entirely with the Breviary issued by our command.
We furthermore enjoin our Nuncios Diplomatic representatives of the Pope stationed in foreign countries. residing in all places to watch over this business diligently and to ensure that everything is carried out according to the decree of this our will.
However, we do not wish for the Breviaries and other aforementioned works that have been printed up to this time to be prohibited by these letters; rather, looking out for the financial safety of all, we permit and allow by Apostolic Referring to the authority of the Pope as the successor of St. Peter. kindness both printers and booksellers to sell them, and churches, clergy, and others to keep and use them.
This stands notwithstanding any licenses, indults, or privileges for printing Breviaries granted to any printers by Us or our predecessors as Roman Pontiffs Popes. up to this point, all of which we expressly revoke by these present letters and wish to be considered revoked; as well as any general or special constitutions or ordinances issued, confirmed, or approved in any way contrary to the foregoing.
