original: "Priores atramento, posteriores sanguine Christianam religionem asseruerunt." This poetic phrase contrasts the scholars (the authors) with the martyrs (those who "fell"), both of whom served the Church in different ways.
Luke Wadding (1588–1657) was an influential Irish Franciscan historian and scholar. This 1806 edition is a later printing of his monumental 1650 work.
A large, symmetrical woodcut vignette. The central element is a stylized human face or mask set within a decorative cartouche. The cartouche is adorned with elaborate acanthus leaves, floral motifs, and scrolls. Two winged griffins or dragons are perched atop the scrollwork, flanking the central crest and facing away from each other.
original: "Ex Typographia S. Michaelis ad Ripam." This refers to the San Michele a Ripa Grande in Rome, a massive complex that included an apostolic printing house.
original: "Superiorum Facultate." This is an official statement indicating that the book has been granted permission to be printed by the ecclesiastical censors or religious leaders.
