Commentary on the Splendor of the Arch-Offices in the Coronations of Charles VII, Maria Amalia, and Francis

I shall do so again, as is fitting, according to the history of the coronations 1 and the sacred rites observed therein. Charles VII 2, therefore, after the death of Charles VI 3, was created King of the Romans and Emperor on January 24, 1742, in the Free Imperial City of Frankfurt am Main; the Queen of Bohemia was absent from this celebration 4. 2. Emperor Charles VII, formerly Charles Albert, born August 6, 1697. His father was Maximilian Maria Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria; his mother was Theresa Cunigunda, daughter of John III, King of Poland. He attained the Electorate on February 26, 1726. He was elected Emperor on January 24, 1742, crowned on February 12 of the same year, and died on January 20, 1745.
3. Charles VI died on October 20, 1740, and Charles VII swore his coronation oath in the electoral conclave on January 31, 1742, after touching the Holy Gospels. Thus, we had an interregnum of fifteen months after the death of Charles VI. Augustus III, King of Poland, in his capacity as Elector of Saxony, administered the Saxon Vicariate; Charles Albert, Elector of Bavaria, and Charles Philip, Elector Palatine, jointly administered the Rhenish Vicariate. Add: CONCLUSIONS which were drafted by a joint Imperial Vicariate Court at Augsburg, Vol. II, 1742, Augsburg. But this Rhenish vicariate had little effect, as it was approved by few in the Empire. They warned that it was contrary to the Golden Bull and lacked the consent of the imperial diet.
