TO THE NEW EDITION

OF THESE ANNALS.

What my occasion for writing was, and what I have achieved in this new edition, I shall explain to you in a few words, kind Reader! When, in the year 1772, the third century original: "Seculum tertium," referring to the 300th anniversary of the founding of this Academy was celebrated with great solemnity, the Academic Fathers original: "Patres Academici," the university’s governing senate or senior faculty formed a plan to publish anew the Rotmarian Annals—a book by now exceedingly rare and hardly to be acquired at any price—and to continue those same annals up to the present time. This task was entrusted to me by a unanimous vote original: "vnanimi calculo," literally "by a unanimous pebble," referring to the ancient method of voting; I undertook it all the more gladly because I considered it to be of great importance, both for the honor of this University (to which I had been attached for four years already as the public Professor of History) and for the common republic of letters original: "rem literariam," the international community of scholars and the shared world of knowledge, that none of those things which, after the time of Rotmar at the University of Ingolstadt, were laudably and ex— The text breaks off mid-word; the catchword "clare" on the following page completes the word "praeclare," meaning "famously" or "excellently."
