original: "S. V. P." (Sacerdotem Virum Praeclarum). Johannes Trithemius, who lived from 1462 to 1516, was a famous German Benedictine abbot and polymath. He was a pioneer in cryptography and a prolific historian. Sponheim was the abbey where he spent much of his career.
original: "Cum gratia & privilegio ad decennium." This was a legal protection granted by a governing authority. It gave the publisher exclusive rights to print and sell the book for ten years to prevent unauthorized copies.
