...[The Bi]shop of Mainz, by the order of Emperor Lothair, summoned a synod of bishops and abbots at Mainz in the year of our Lord 848, the eleventh indiction. In this council, he condemned a certain heretic named Gottschalk, a priest, and established many rules for the beauty and utility of the church. Among others present were very famous men, including Hetti the Archbishop of Trier, Hildebold the Archbishop of Cologne, Altfrid the Bishop of Hildesheim, Haymo the Bishop of Halberstadt, Luderick the Bishop of Bremen, and this same Lintbert, the first abbot of Saint Aurelius of Hirsau. Also present were Waldo the Abbot of Fulda, Einhard the Abbot of Seligenstadt, Brunward the Abbot of Hersfeld, and Bertolph the Bishop of Mettlach; Adventius the Abbot of Metz, who was later bishop there; and Radulph the Abbot of Saint Medard in Soissons, later the Archbishop of Bourges. Many other bishops, abbots, and monks were there, among whom several were most famous for their life and learning.
The error of a false prophetess.In these days, a certain woman deceived many people from both the clergy and the common folk throughout the diocese of Mainz. She pretended that an angel of God had appeared to her to announce that the final Day of Judgment was imminent. She was eventually seized by Archbishop Rabanus and confessed that she had been led into this scheme for the sake of profit, following the advice of a certain priest.
Saint Helena.In the eleventh year of Abbot Lintbert, the body of the holy Empress Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, was moved from Rome to Gaul by a monk named Theogisus. It was placed in the parish of Reims, though her head is shown today in the church at Trier.
There was a famine in Germany. The mercy of Lintbert.In the thirteenth year, a very powerful famine so devastated Germany that a father, whose son had died of hunger, wished to cook and eat him by the fire. This would have happened if he had not been stopped by chance by his neighbors. In these days, the mercy shown toward the poor by the excellent Abbot Lintbert brought a great name both to him and to the monastery of Hirsau. For the more he distributed for the use of the poor, the more he received in return. Archbishop Rabanus also showed great generosity to the poor while that famine lasted.
England becomes tributary to the pope.Around these times, the most Christian King Ethelwulf original: "Adelolphus" of England traveled to Rome under Pope Leo IV. Out of greatest devotion, he made his province tributary to the Roman Church. He decreed that a silver coin should be paid to Saint Peter every year from every single house. Lupus the priestLupus Servatus the priest, a very learned man, died and went to the Lord. Rabanus, while he was still an abbot, once wrote eight books to him concerning the Epistle of Paul to the Romans. Two years earlier, this Lupus had been present at the synod of Mainz. There, in a very strong debate before everyone present, he clearly defeated and refuted that priest
The errors of Gottschalk the priest.Gottschalk, who held wrong opinions concerning free will, predestination, and the blood of Christ, and was disturbing many people. To make the truth even more clear, Lupus composed a very beautiful treatise on these matters, among other things he wrote.
Haymo died.In the fifteenth year of Abbot Lintbert, which is the year of our Lord 853, Saint Haymo died. He was the third Bishop of Halberstadt and formerly a monk of Hersfeld. He was a man beloved by God in all things. Through his words, writings, and example, he called many back to the paths of justice. He is buried in the greater church of Halberstadt.
Hildegrinus succeeds Haymo.Saint Hildegrinus succeeded him in the bishopric for nearly thirty four years.
Ansgar.In these times, Saint Ansgar was famous. He was formerly a monk of the monastery of Corvey and became the first Archbishop of Bremen. Before him, there were three bishops, namely Wiho original: "Vuilhardus", Willerich, and Luderick, under the Archbishop of Cologne. But after the city of Hamburg was destroyed by the Danes, Emperor Lothair moved the archbishopric that was then located there to Bremen. He placed Saint Ansgar himself over it. Ansgar sat for thirty four years. He was a learned and most holy man who performed many miracles during his life and after his death.
