those who were born or raised in this province (after having arrived here as tender children of 1 or 2 years, e.g., Val. Alberti) and died here, but at the same time also those who found their livelihood outside our province as their fatherland, without excluding those who were born elsewhere but were provided for in this margraviate and stayed here for some years and wrote, even if they have since left the province. However, such foreigners who stood in offices here only as a brief, passing appearance, perhaps for only 1 year, e.g., Petr. Albinus and Mr. Director Böttiger in Weimar, I have indeed listed with an enumeration of their writings that appeared in print before their arrival here and during their stay; however, regarding their products that appeared in print after their departure, the writings providing notice thereof are indicated. These principles I have also kept in mind regarding the artists. — Only with a few writers have I made an exception for special reasons, which I state in the articles themselves. — The living inhabitants are marked with **, the deceased with *, the living naturalized foreigners with ††, and the deceased of that kind with † at the beginning of the article. Where something is doubtful in this regard, a ? indicates it. — With some of the still-living, one also finds the addition: Autographum autograph — communicated — revised; this addition makes the different form of the articles explainable and at the same time provides pleasant entertainment.
Regarding many books and treatises, I have indicated the reviews that have become known to me
