Bertholdus, from Constance and a priest there, appears to be the same person as Bernoldus or Bernaldus, since in the works of ancient writers they not only hold the same spiritual rank, but the same writings are attributed to both. He was uncommonly devoted to Pope Gregory VII, whose ecclesiastical mandates he was not only diligent in defending through his writings, but also showed his zeal by fighting in person in the battle of 1086 against Emperor Henry IV. He took great care in every possible way to weaken the Emperor's party and to strengthen the Pope's, to which end he had been made a priest and pœnitentiarius apostolicus apostolic penitentiary by the same. The titles of the aforementioned works of Bertholdus will appear in the listing of the editions. Beyond these, Bertholdus made a continuation of the chronicle of Hermannus Contractus from the year 1054 to 1066, and further completed a chronicle from the year 1053 to 1100. How long he lived after the latter is not known.
