An ornamental headpiece at the top of the page consists of a decorative border with a central seashell motif. Inside the border are two square frames containing radiant sunburst designs, separated by a diamond-shaped arrangement of stars.

ACT ONE.

The stage represents a landscape; on the right is a cottage, next to which is a stone bench; on the left is a small mound crowned by an elm tree: from this spot flows a spring of living water which forms a basin; behind is a chain of high mountains, which fades into the distance. The Seigneurial Castle is visible at some distance; a vast field of wheat occupies the rest of the countryside.

SCENE ONE.

Dawn begins to appear; the stars are still visible. The Hut is open; it is lit by a lamp. Gennevote, seated on the bench, spins her distaff. Rosine, inside the house, measures a bushel of grain.
