The stage represents a cooper's shop. At the back, on one side, is the street door; on the opposite side, the door to a room; at the front of the stage and to the left of the Actors, a dove; higher up, a barrel; to the right, a trestle, and in the wings a wash-tub, which is half-advanced onto the stage.
The scene is in the village, inside Martin's shop.
The action begins around two o'clock in the afternoon; it lasts about eight hours.
The play is a mixture of the old and the new genre.
