Ah! what torment!
How, how!
At every turn,
No rest;
Always lawsuits,
Never peace.
A Regiment
Drumming away,
With its pata tapan onomatopoeia for drumming,
Breaks the eardrum less,
Than a woman in fury,
Who screams.
Ah! what torment! &c.

SCENE IV.

M. SIMON, HIS WIFE, FANCHETTE.

Madame SIMON

You have good patience! With my dress, why have you taken one of my neckerchiefs?

FANCHETTE.

My mother....

During this Scene, Madame Simon remains with arms crossed, shrugs her shoulders from time to time, looks at him in pity; Simon at the end of his song takes her by the arm, brings her near the armchair, & wipes off the powder that the wig has left.
