On the Mysteries

have been. It accompanies [them as] helpers, and he has these from that [source] and by them, and through them it sends away all the suffering and injury that is from the gods. Those indeed who fix these, and before all the engravings, [both] the [divine] and natural, it is not possible that they ever be freed from them and halt [them]. And that all the same things [are] in the same way, it holds in the sacred [rites]. Of these [things] of ours, and it never departs. We see the ways of those, the opposite happens, not a non-moving zoology, and impassible, and [that] it happens [that] the divine is a release, which things truly are, they themselves are the powers being forgotten, the stars we demonstrated. Not after these, moving onto another cause [is] the choice of gods toward demons. For you say the gods are necessary clearly as you suggest, proposing the opinion, or as if telling it [as] pleasing to it. Reckoning the demons to be partakers of a partial intellect. That these things seem so to many philosophers, it has not escaped me. But to you, I do not think [it is] right to hide the truth that appears, for these [things] are mixed together and will be the same, they themselves are partakers of the form of intellect. But from the gods, that [it is] falling from the immaterial intellect according to energy.
