In this public assembly and presence of the Academy, I ratify and confirm [their merits]. Having been granted the power to publicly confer the rank of Mastership or the Doctorate of Philosophy, I now name, create, appoint, proclaim, and announce as CANDIDATES and LICENTIATES A "Licentiate" was a degree-holder who had been granted the "license" to teach, ranking between a Bachelor and a Doctor. of the Arts and Philosophy these men whom they have brought forward with such distinguished recommendation and great approval original Greek: ἐπισημασίᾳ (episēmasia).
To this recommendation, to this judgment, and to this petition, I now GLADLY AND DESERVEDLY assent according to the ancient rite and formula; nor do I see any obstacle among you, Listeners, that might prevent me from satisfying this honorable request.
Therefore—may it be happy and auspicious, and beneficial to both the Church and the State (both of which claim the greater part of our service from birth); and may it bring benefit to our Academy and honor to the Candidates and the Philosophical College—I, David Lipsius, Doctor of Philosophy and Medicine, etc., by the authority and power original Greek: ἐξουσίᾳ (exousia) of that office which I now hold in this ceremony.
