If you spot an error, have a suggestion, or just want to say hello — we’d love to hear from you.

You, I say, all and each of you, I name as Licentiates of the Arts and Philosophy; having named you, I make you such by the best right and form I am able; having made you, I designate you; having designated you, I create you; having created you, I proclaim you; and having proclaimed you, I announce you.
But to YOU, the Honorable, most Distinguished, most Gracious, and most Learned man, Master HERMANN LINDAN, Master of the Arts and Philosophy, Candidate of Sacred Theology original Latin: SS. LL. Candidato (Candidate of Sacred Letters), most worthy Dean of the Philosophical Faculty and of the College of the Gate of Heaven original: PortaCœli. This likely refers to a specific residential college or foundation within the university system. at this very time, and Public Professor of Eloquence in this Academy: to YOU, I say, and to the whole Philosophical College, I impart the faculty; I confer the indulgence; I permit the power to bestow the supreme honor and title of your Order upon these new Licentiates whenever you please, and to grant and assign all the insignia, privileges, and rights of the same.
I authorize you to publicly invest them with those solemn rites, philosophical ornaments, and those things with which the Emperors wished this degree to be adorned: namely, the BOOK, the ACADEMIC CAP original: PIRETO (a misspelling of bireto). The biretta or cap symbolized the freedom and authority of the scholar., and the RING The ring symbolized the scholar's marriage to his discipline.; to grant them the right of the Chair The right to teach formally from a professor's seat.; the right of teaching, reading, writing, interpreting, and explaining; of defending true dogmas by voice and pen; of attacking and refuting false ones; and of granting authority.
And thus, I permit you to announce them as MASTERS of the Arts and Philosophy—provided that a Promoter has first been legitimately elected for this purpose and the usual oath has been sworn—applying the ceremonies already mentioned and customary. And this I do with a clear voice, and having invoked the name of the Holy and Indivisible Trinity: the FATHER, THE SON, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT, Amen.
May this GOD, Three and One, always be present and favor your endeavors and your honors, which I truly pray and wish for with all my heart.
