Since, Christian Singer, the Holy Scripture, in both the Old and the New Testament, admonishes us not only to read but also to sing, it seemed good to me to gather together those songs that have been left to us in writing by the sacrificed children of God, especially those treating of the betraying, capturing, examining, tormenting, torturing, and killing. And because they have now, through the power of God, been delivered from all these aforementioned things and have entered into rest, let us rejoice and be merry over this, singing songs like the children of Israel did when they were delivered from the hand of Pharaoh. They praised the Lord, making His Name great, and said:
I will sing to the Lord, for He has done gloriously. Horse and rider He has thrown into the sea. The Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation, etc.
And Sirach referring to the Book of Sirach or Ecclesiasticus also says:
† Eccl. 39.b.19
† Praise together that Song, and bless the Lord in His works.
