So Paul teaches us,
Until Christ the Lord comes.
When they now held it as heresy,
All that the Pope established,
So was on the thirteenth of November
The bench prepared at Delden.
Maria and Wisel came quickly,
To stand before Pilate and Caiaphas a biblical reference used here to characterize the judges;
There they were sentenced to death,
But they rejoiced in this.
Now it happens to us according to Christ's teaching:
Mat. 10.c.24 ‡That the disciple is not above
Joan. 13.b.16 His Master, or the servant the Lord.
So they went to praise God.
When the people saw their steadfastness,
They shed many tears;
When one led them to the stake,
They sang with joy and spoke:
Luce.23.c.27 *Do not weep for that which is done to us,
We do not suffer as sorcerers,
1.Pet. 4.b.15 †Or other evildoers, spoke Maria boldly.
To be with Christ is our desire;
Praised be God that we have experienced
The hour, they said all around.
Ezech. 18.d 30 ‡Convert yourselves, remain standing on God’s word,
So it shall go well for you eternally.
When now the time of suffering came,
Maria opened it blissfully:
Dear sister, the heaven is opened!
Acto.7.f.56 *As Stephen has spoken.
†1.Pet. 1.a.6 That we now suffer in †short time,
For that, our soul shall be eternally gladdened,
And live with Christ our Bridegroom.
2.Cor. 13.b.12 ‡So I wish to give you the kiss of peace.
They prayed to God on the high throne:
Luc.23.c.33. *Forgive them their sins,
Acto.7.f.60 For they do not know what they do.
Still one heard them murmuring:
The world is now very deaf and blind,
Have mercy on your daughters and child,
And let us not depart from you;
Take our soul into your eternal kingdom.
First they took Maria, who prayed very sweetly,
Then comforted without sorrow,
That they would not shed that innocent blood
Anymore.
She fell on her knees down,
And spoke her prayer unto the Lord,
Poignant in her needs,
Acto.7.f.60 †and prayed even for those who killed her.
Thereafter she jumped with a free spirit,
Upon the wood with joy.
I cannot tell it as sweetly
As she was prepared to suffer:
To Christ I have given myself over,
And know that I shall live eternally with you;
Luc.23.d.46. *O Father in the forest of heaven a poetic term for the celestial realm,
Acto.7.f.59 In your hand I commend my spirit.
The executioner cursed with an evil mood,
That
