Rev. 13:15
In Babylon’s forest,
Because they would not worship
That image nor its beast,
Nor receive its mark
On the forehead or right hand;
Thus they had to, before long,
Be very heavily banished.
Now hear you Princes of the beasts,
Who suppress God’s children here,
To which you false spirits,
Rev. 18:3
†How you press the great abomination.
The Scripture makes it clear to us,
And as I have delighted therein,
Rev. 19:20
*How the beast and its companions
Must go into the fiery pool.
He who first sought this little song,
Hear his voice out of love;
The spirit that worked in him,
You friends, pray for him,
That he, like these five, confessed,
Does, and is firmly minded
To offer such an offering,
Rev. 2:10
Whereby one wins the eternal crown.
Of a young
companion named
David and a
woman named
Leuyna, burned
at Ghent,
in the year 1554.
O You Christians all together,
Prepare yourselves for the fight;
Do not be ashamed of God’s Word
Before people full of spite,
But bravely confess it.
So that Christ may not deny you,
According to His word,
Before the holy Angels.
Matt. 7:15
*Beware of false Prophets
Who come in sheep’s clothing,
Matt. 23:13
*Who eat the widows’ houses;
Rom. 16:16
Within, they are evil wolves.
2 Tim. 3:5
For God’s Word, through hatred,
They seek to hide,
As it has well appeared
In Ghent, as follows here.
When one wrote fifteen hundred
And fifty-four clearly,
David, very pious of life,
He was caught there;
He was very young of years.
He has at the city of Ghent
His faith bravely confessed,
Humbly and openly.
When he was in torments,
In suffering and sorrow,
Of their Sacraments
They asked him for his meaning.
He spoke: I do not value them;
I hold to none of them,
Even if you would all at once
Kill me by your command.
A Priest, all with hesitation,
Spoke like a hypocrite:
You are lost so far;
That you now so suddenly
Confess your faith here,
One shall damage your body;
Will you not reconsider
Before time passes?
David answered to that
With words very sweet,
As Christians ought:
Acts 21:13
*I am prepared with courage
To shed my blood now;
Yes, here in this very place,
Ps. 27:1
†God is my salvation,
Who protects me now here.
