But a wonder appeared at the last.
After the burning, the fire
And embers were extinguished.
David still moved his head;
This wonder one saw plainly.
The people made observations:
Look, one sees him still living!
The Executioner was there beside;
Hear what he did.
He took (it is clearly evidenced)
The breast in his hand,
And has therewith stabbed
Three times into his insides,
Near the side of the heart.
The blood ran out;
Ps. 35:2 †On God stood all his hope,
Thus he did not come to shame.
When that was now completed,
Then one has, at that step,
Still perceived life in him.
The Executioner tied very quickly
A chain to the stake and neck,
And broke his neck
With force, and stabbed;
Who knows if he was dead?
Isa. 41:14; Luke 12:32 *Do not degrade yourself,
Little flock, for torment;
It is the Father’s good pleasure
To rain refreshment upon you, quite beautifully.
1 Cor. 3:11 Stay firmly on the foundation,
1 Kings 19:10 Which is Christ exalted;
*Even if they stand ready for your life,
Suffering here soon takes an end.
Matt. 10:19; Luke 12:11 †When they into their schools
Bring you before proud Princes,
God’s spirit shall unashamedly
Speak in such confusion
Through your mouth soon;
Thus you wish to praise the Lord,
Through you let His praise rise
At all times here.
2 Tim. 3:12 *They who want to live godly,
As the Scripture indicates to us,
They are all driven out;
We lament it loudly.
Lord, that You may, Your dear Bride,
Graciously have pity on,
Receive in Your arms,
Thereon I make my conclusion.
When one wrote fifteen hundred years
And fifty-one thereunto, in truth,
The twenty-first of July, also,
A pious sister, a brother after that,
Traveled to Ghent with God in peace.
Each at a stake they were placed;
The brother named Gielis, the sister Lijsbet;
It happened at one after the noon.
There two pious Christians, named Gielis and Lijsbet, offered up at Ghent, in the year 1551.
