Lely, Lucas Fopsz · 1614

An elaborate engraved title page for a calligraphy manual. The central text is enclosed within a decorative architectural cartouche. At the top of the engraving are two panoramic cityscapes in oval frames: "Amsterdam" on the left and "Hoorn" on the right. In the center top, a portrait of a bearded man (presumably the author, Lucas Lopez) is set within an oval frame, flanked by quill pens and laurel sprigs. To the left of the central cartouche, a man in 17th-century scholar's attire stands holding a quill pen and a branch. To the right, a woman stands in contemporary dress holding a palm branch. At the base of the cartouche, two children are depicted: a boy on the left writing on a tablet at a small desk, and a girl on the right reading or writing. They are framed by hanging swags of fruit and leaves. A smaller cartouche at the bottom center contains the publisher's imprint. The engraver's name, "Cornelis Boel sculpsit," is visible at the bottom left edge of the scene.
Containing within itself all the foremost Netherlandic, French, Italian, and Overlandsche Foreign/Germanic scripts, with their capital and lowercase ABC letters.
Along with the proofs and foundations of all writing.
