Lely, Lucas Fopsz · 1614

A manuscript page featuring calligraphic specimens. On the far left is a large, square, ornamental initial letter "K" filled with intricate interlaced strapwork and foliage designs. The main area of the page is framed by expansive, looping pen flourishes forming a circular shape. Inside this circle are three rows of an uppercase alphabet in a formal Gothic script, followed by a block of six lines of German text written in Kurrent script. Below this block, integrated into further flourishes, are the words "Lern" (Learn) and "Fleiß" (Diligence). At the bottom are a lowercase alphabet (omitting j and u) and the numerals 1 through 0, followed by the year 1579.
K
True honorableness and virtue is
not a fleeting ornament, but an
unfading wreath, which one well
gains through righteous and holy
living, and the love of God in eternal
truth and justice.
