Lely, Lucas Fopsz · 1614

A calligraphic specimen page. At the top, two lines of a flourished uppercase alphabet are followed by a label for the script style, "Italienne Posée." Below this, a large decorative initial 'V', ornamented with shaded foliate flourishes, begins a moral passage written in an elegant, slanted italic hand. The bottom of the page features a lowercase alphabet showcasing multiple variations of letters, followed by a calligraphic monogram within an intricate flourish.
Translation: Virtue is praiseworthy in itself; it always carries its immortal honor: just like the Palm tree, which, being trodden down further, rises higher in its exertion. Likewise, the more virtue is oppressed, the more immortal and resplendent it will be.
