Dorset

A detailed copperplate engraved map of Dorset, oriented with North at the top. The county is bordered by Wiltshire to the north ("PART OF WILT. SHIRE"), Somerset and Devon to the west ("PART OF SOMERSET SHIRE"), and the English Channel to the south. The title "Dorset" is set within an ornate, rectangular strapwork cartouche in the bottom-left corner. Below the title is a "Scale of Miles" with markers for 5 and 10 miles. A smaller scrollwork frame contains the engraver's credit: "Petrus Kerius celavit" (Petrus Kerius engraved this). The landscape is densely populated with pictorial symbols representing settlements, church towers, hills, and clusters of trees. The sea is textured with intricate wavy patterns and is labeled "OCEAN". The map is enclosed within a double-line border, with Latin cardinal directions (North, East, West, South) placed near the corners.
