Septentrio North
An engraved map of the county of Staffordshire, titled "Staffordia", from a seventeenth-century atlas. The map is oriented with East at the top of the page. It depicts the county's topography, including winding rivers (notably the "Trent flu."), hills, and numerous settlements marked by pictorial icons of churches and buildings. Major bordering regions are labeled in large capitals: "CESTRIÆ PARS" (Cheshire), "DARBIE PARS" (Derbyshire), "LECESTRIÆ PARS" (Leicestershire), "SALOPIÆ PARS" (Shropshire), and "WIGORNIÆ PARS" (Worcestershire). Key towns identified include New chap. (Newcastle-under-Lyme), Stafford, Lychfelde (Lichfield), Uttoxeter, and Wulverhampton. A decorative strapwork cartouche in the lower-left corner contains the title and a bar scale. The cardinal directions "Septentrio" (North) and "Meridies" (South) are inscribed in the left and right margins.
