An ornate engraved title page for a 17th-century atlas of the Netherlands. The title text is contained within a central oval cartouche decorated with Baroque scrolls. At the top center, an open book is held up by a winged putto on the left and a scholar or geographer on the right who points to a small map on the page. On the left side of the cartouche, sailing ships are visible at sea. At the bottom left, Neptune reclines with his trident beside a sea monster. At the bottom right, another muscular male figure reclines, representing the land or a river god. At the bottom center, a small heraldic shield displays a rampant lion (the Leo Belgicus the Lion of the Netherlands, a common allegorical representation of the region).
