rant. It draws the lower jaw upward, closing the mouth at the same time and constricting the teeth.
Depressor of the lower jaw.
It arises broad and nervous from the styloid process, whence, having become round, fleshy, and slender, it recurs immediately below the styloid. It becomes a nervous and round tendon. Then it appears fleshy again, and is inserted into the middle and inner part of the lower jaw, which, by pulling downward, opens the mouth.
Moves the lower jaw in various ways.
It arises from a double beginning, firm, ample, and nervous; first from the suture where the fourth and first bones of the upper jaw are joined, then fleshy from the zygomatic bone, firmly and broadly inserted into the outer part of the lower jaw. By its variously interwoven fibers, it moves the lower jaw forward, backward, and from side to side.
