ATLAS

A hand-colored engraved frontispiece features the mythological figure Atlas. He is depicted as a muscular, bearded man draped in a red cloak, standing upon the top of a large terrestrial globe. He supports the weight of a grey, cloud-like celestial sphere representing the heavens on his shoulders. The globe beneath him shows a map of the continents of Europe, Africa, and Asia, with Latin labels including "EUROPA", "AFRICA", "ASIA", "OCEANUS AETHIOPICUS" Ethiopian Ocean, and "MAR DI INDIA" Indian Sea. To the left of the globe, a large yellow and orange sun with rays is partially visible; to the right, a pale white moon. The background is a dark, star-speckled sky. In the bottom corners, small groups of figures are gathered, looking up at the globe. The word "ATLAS" is inscribed on a golden scroll-like banner at the top center.
