My Birth-place is Willoughby in the Province of Lincoln, subsequently I became a Scholar in the 2 free Schools of Alford in Louth; from my father’s side I am descended from long ago from the old Stem of the Smiths of Crudley, in the Province of Lancaster, and from my mother’s side from the Rickands of Great Heck in the Province of York; my Parents, who passed away when I was about 13 years of age, left me fine means; but being in no state to manage them, I did not pay much attention to my studies,
