Gosnold departs from Falmouth.
Decorative drop cap 'C' featuring a stylized floral or sunburst motif within a circle.Captain Gosnold set sail from Falmouth on the 26th of March 1602, having 32 men, among whom were eight sailors and sail-makers. Twelve of them had the objective of returning to England with the ship, the Discovery the ship's name, and the others to remain there in the land for settlement.
St. Mary: an Island of the Azores.
On the 14th of April, we caught sight of St. Mary, an island of the Azores.
The Ocean appears yellow.
On the 23rd of the same month, we had advanced 200 miles from the aforementioned island, up to 37 degrees Westward. The water in the great Ocean appeared yellow for about two miles in the North and South directions. We sounded and found no bottom at 30 fathoms. We drew a bucket of that water, but it had no other taste or color than sea-blue.
He sees all manner of fowl at sea.
On the 7th of May, we saw for the first time several birds, the size of rock-doves, and among others also penguins, petrels, coots, hagbuts, water-hens, geese, gannets, gulls, and several others that we do not know how to name in our (English) language.
And the Sea green again.
On the 8th, the color of the water changed and was green instead of yellow, and we found bottom at 70 fathoms of water.
