being completely naked, except that they had a deer-skin hanging loosely about their shoulders and some other skins, which resembled well-browned Irish rugs, tied about their loins. One of them, who seemed to be their Chief, had a black cloth around his loins, trousers, stockings, and shoes on, with a hat and belt around his body. One or two more of them were also clothed with one thing or another that was made by Christians. They marked the coast thereabouts for us with chalk, and knew how to speak of Placentia and the newly-found land. They used several words of the Christians and seemed to understand us more than we could understand them because of ignorance of their language. These people were dark and had their hair, which is quite long, knotted at the sides of the head or in the neck. They were well-built and strong of body, which is painted. They requested that we stay there a while longer, but as we had not yet touched upon the coast where we had intended to go, we sailed Westward from there and so parted from those wild men and their coast.
Sees 2 small Islands.About 16 miles to the South-West from there, we saw two small islands, one lying East of the Wild Rock, and the other somewhat further South. The coast that we left was full of fine wooded growth, pleasant fields, and some round hills that were covered in green, though all rocky and of glistening stones, which could have moved us all to remain there for a while longer.
The Island Sholehope. On the 15th, we saw land again, which jutted out with a headland and was in our estimation an island, because we noticed a current to the West side of it, between that and the mainland, just as we also found a wide opening upon coming to the West end, and therefore named it Sholehope.
