Codfish Cape. Not far from this cape, we anchored in 15 fathoms, where we caught a great many codfish, and therefore changed the name and called it Codfish Cape. We also saw here a great multitude of herring, mackerel, and other small fish. The beach here was low and sandy, but without danger, as we anchored close to the land in 16 fathoms of water. This cape lies at the latitude of 42 degrees, is about a mile wide, and extends North-East by East. The Captain went ashore here and found the ground full of peas, ground-nuts, and other sorts of berries, though all unripe. Toward the sea-side, there was reasonably deep sand. The firewood that we took there was of cypress, birch, wild hazel, and beech.
An Indian shows himself inclined to serve Gosnold.
While the Captain was ashore, a young Indian came to him, who was armed with bow and arrows, had copper plates hanging from his ears, and showed himself inclined to be of service to us.
On the 16th, we sailed along the coast to the South, where it was all an open field and full of grass, but the islands were somewhat covered with wood.
Danger of a shoal:
Twelve miles from Codfish Cape, we discovered a point, and a piece of the way from there a sandbar, and while we were luffing to get past that point, we suddenly fell upon a shoal, from which we nevertheless saved ourselves at once, and for reason of the evident danger, called it the Loevers an expression indicating "the lover's/luffer's" fright or scare fright.
Name given for that reason.
Just as we also named the point Care. Having passed that, we turned again toward the land, where we anchored against the night in eight fathoms, on good ground.
On the 17th, we saw several such inlets, but we kept our course all that day.
Gilbert's point.
On the 18th, fair weather. We sent our boat out to sound across a bank that lay in our path about another point, which we named Gilbert's Point, which reported to us
