Outfitting of a fleet of ships by King Emanuel of Portugal to India.
A decorative drop cap 'N' with ornate floral and scrollwork designs.
After King Emanuel of Portugal had discovered certain yachts and galleys, which traversed the Southern Regions and had reached India by that route, according to the guidance of those who had discovered these Lands in previous years, the same Majesty had another fleet of ships outfitted in the Year 1500, consisting of twelve ships, in order to venture thither. The commander of these was Petrus Aliares, who departed from Lisbona Lisbon on the eighth of March. After having endured many dangers, he finally arrived on the thirteenth of September of the same Year at Calicuth, with only seven of his keels; for of the other five, four had sunk to the abyss due to a very terrifying Storm; the fifth had taken the route to Sofala.
Arrival at Calicuth.
The aforementioned ships remained in the Harbor of Calicuth for three months. But since a great conflict then arose between the Inhabitants of the named City and these Portuguese, through which many people lost their lives, the latter departed for Cochin on the twenty-fourth of December.
