His Birth-City Caranganor lies over ninety Miles from Calicuth, on a River named Milibaer, about fifteen Miles inland. This City has no Walls, and extends itself in length for many Miles: however, it is to be noted here that the Houses are not built close to one another, as in other Cities; but far from one another, in such a way that each appears to dwell as if in a separate Village. Many Waters flow through it; and the Houses generally stand on the Water.
Inhabitants, Christians and Heathens.
Two types of Peoples dwell in the mentioned City: Christians and Heathens. Formerly they had collectively worshipped Idols and many kinds of Animals. Their King is still Heathen today. Furthermore, there are many Jews here, but very despised. A great number of Merchants come thither, from Syria, Egypt, Persia, Arabia, and Media, to conduct their Trade here: for nearly all Spices are brought thither: also many things grow here which serve humans for utility and health.

The Inhabitants of this City are divided into three types. The most prominent and respectable among them are called in their Language Naires, the others, not of as great standing and Wealth, Hondt.
