Monasteries, and great chastity.
They have monasteries, in which Black Monks live in a special chastity, as do their priests, and the virgins in the women's monasteries. If any priest is found in unchastity, he may no longer perform Mass.
No divorce.
Among these Christians, there is no divorce. Whether one of the married couple is good or bad, both must remain together until their death. Three times a year they receive the Holy Sacrament.
Preachers. Schools.
They have many learned men and good preachers, likewise good schools. The teachers expound upon the Bible wonderfully, as Joseph said. The reading of the Prophets is customary among them.
Clothing. Year and day division.
Their style of dress is like that of the Moors, consisting of coats of linen. They divide the year into twelve months, just as we do, and also have a leap year of three hundred sixty-six days every fourth year. Their day is divided (not into twenty-four hours as with us, but) into sixty parts. They distinguish these parts by day by the sun, and by night by the stars.
Location of Caranganor. Longest day.
The inhabitants of Caranganor lie, according to the report of Joseph the Indian, between the Summer Solstice (Solstitium Æstivum) and the Equator. Their longest day is thirteen and a half hours, the shortest ten hours, calculated according to our hours, not theirs, which are much shorter, as was shown in the previous chapter.
