the same is a Mahometaan. The city is very large and has many inhabitants, and the land is fruitful in everything. Many merchant goods come thither, and others are transported from there. Very beautiful glassware is made here, yes, even the most beautiful. Pearls are found here in multitude. Also a great number of horses, which are sold in Indiën the Indies and serve them to transport their goods.

From the Head of Mogolistan, situated in the middle of the island Ormus, to the city of Cambaya, one sees many cities of the Moors, among which the most excellent are Sobobek, Semath, and Chesimy. Inwardly lies the city of Guzurath; but on the shore, the city of Cambaya, about three hundred miles from the Head of Mogolistan.

The city of Cambaya lies very crookedly, and here the river is called Guzurath. In former times, the city of Guzurath was called Betrosia original: Gedrosia. This region has many cities, towns, and villages, all well inhabited. The inhabitants sustain themselves by all manner of crafts and trade. They honor the idols, the sun, and the moon: also the
Cows in great honor.
Cows, which are in such esteem among them that the one who kills a cow must also die immediately. They kill no beasts and also eat no creatures that have been killed by others. They drink no white wine.

The men are white, much more so than the inhabitants of the city of Calicut: but they are also sorcerers. They let their head hair and beard grow, so that they have locks or tufts like the women. This hair they wind wonderfully around their heads. They take no more than one wife, and the women but one husband. Those who are unmarried live in a singular, great chastity. They eat mash of all kinds of herbs which the common mother, the earth (as Pythagoras calls it), brings forth. This shall now be enough said of the city of Guzurath. We wish now also to give some report of the city of Cambaya.
