with men and all. Upon this, all those who had remained there held counsel regarding what was best to do in such a state of affairs. Everything came to a common agreement (since they despaired of the return of Sir Richard Greenville, and in consideration of the previous misery and inconveniences that had been suffered) that they would all sail back to England with him. Francis Drake had also suffered his share of the storm and had been in greater danger than in all his noble deeds that he had conducted against the enemies, so that they too arrived back at Portsmouth on the 27th of July in the year 1586.
1586.It was in the year 1586 that Sir Walter Raleigh and his associates equipped a new ship of one hundred tons, which was abundantly provided with all necessities, which put to sea around Pentecost. It arrived at Hatorask and spent a considerable time scouting that region inland, but since they could not achieve their objective, they sailed back to England with all their supplies. It was about 14 or 15 days later that Sir Richard Greenville, accompanied by three other ships, arrived there, who, contrary to his expectation, did not find the aforementioned ship there, much less any news of the people who had settled there and (as has been said) had remained there in the year 1585. They sailed up and down that same region to look for them, but as he could learn nothing of them and found their living quarters abandoned, and yet being inclined not to lose possession of that land, he found it advisable (after mature consideration) to leave 15 men on that island of Roanoack and provided them with all kinds of supplies for the period of two years, after which he sailed back to England.
