that we feared we would perish. From this cape, we went to search for a haven called Manguslave, a place where we had to land, which is situated 12 miles from the entrance of the gulf on the South coast. However, the storm caused us to fall upon the North coast, opposite Manguslave. The land there is low, the place not secure for ships, and perhaps no bark had ever landed there before us.

We sent our people ashore to negotiate with the governor, both to obtain provisions and carriers who would transport our wares to Sellizure, 25 days' journey from our landing place. Those we sent returned with fair promises, and on the 3rd of September we unloaded our bark upon their assurance. The Prince received me well, but when I came to negotiate regarding the carriers and the provisions, we were troubled, such that we were forced to buy water ourselves and pay for everything twice as much as it was worth. We were forced to give what they demanded, and for every camel, which could not carry more than 400 pounds, we gave 3 Russian hides, along with 4 wooden dishes, and to the Prince or Governor a ninth and a seventh, namely a gift of 9 separate items and another of 7, for they do not use any currency.

On the 14th of September, we departed with a caravan of 1000 camels, and after having covered 5 days' journey, we found ourselves in the states of another Tartar Prince.
