An 18th-century copperplate engraving depicts a canal scene in Amsterdam. In the foreground, several small wooden boats and barges navigate a wide canal; one barge in the lower left carries barrels and is steered by two figures with poles. The middle ground features a dense row of gabled canal houses. Behind these houses rises the grand, domed structure of the Amsterdam City Hall (Stadhuis, now the Royal Palace), with its prominent dome and rooftop statuary. The left bank of the canal is lined with leafy trees. The composition is framed by buildings on the far right edge.
