A detailed copperplate engraving titled "The CORN EXCHANGE" shows the Corn Exchange in Amsterdam. The exchange is an open square featuring several timber-roofed galleries supported by a series of classical columns. The square is populated by numerous figures in 17th-century Dutch dress (cloaks, wide-brimmed hats) engaged in conversation and trade. In the left foreground, a dog runs. To the right, a man leads a horse pulling a wooden sled (a "sleep") loaded with barrels. In the background, the masts and rigging of ships are visible on the water to the left, while the Amsterdam skyline with its gabled houses and the prominent tall spire of the Oude Kerk (Old Church) rises to the right. The sky is filled with voluminous clouds.
