A copperplate engraving depicts a view of the Nieuwe Brug (New Bridge) in Amsterdam. The bridge is a low, sturdy stone structure with several arched openings or sluice gates, crossing a wide body of water (the IJ). It is crowded with many tiny figures of people walking across. In the foreground, several boats are on the water, including a larger sailing vessel with its mast lowered and a few smaller rowing boats. On either side of the bridge, the waterfront is lined with tall, narrow Dutch gabled houses typical of 17th-century Amsterdam architecture. The sky is expansive with large, detailed clouds. Below the image is a caption block divided into Latin and Dutch text.
