Schenk, Petrus, graveur en uitgever, 1661-1711/13 · 1705

A detailed etching depicts two large historical wooden cranes on a wooden wharf in the port of Amsterdam. The larger crane (De Groote Kraan) and a smaller one (De Kleene Kraan) are shown as massive timber-framed structures with long, angled jibs, used for hoisting cargo. In the background, a dense forest of masts from numerous sailing vessels fills the harbor (the IJ). The sky features large, billowy clouds and several birds in flight. The scene reflects the maritime industrial activity of 17th-century Amsterdam.
Greater and Lesser Cranes, by which goods are either lowered into ships or taken out of them.
The Great and Small CRANE on the IJ; the former belonging in the year 1493 to the House-Poor charitable organization for the poor living in their own homes in the parish of St. Nicholas.
