A hand-colored engraved map of the Seventeen Provinces of the Netherlands. The map is bordered by a grid of latitude and longitude. In the lower-left corner, a large, ornate decorative cartouche contains the map's title. The cartouche is topped by a crowned coat of arms and flanked by mythological figures: to the left, a male figure (Neptune) holding a trident; to the right, a reclining female figure leaning on an urn pouring water (a river deity); and various cherubs holding navigation instruments and nautical maps. A large compass rose is situated in the middle of the North Sea. The map identifies major water bodies like the "ZUYDER ZEE" and "NORTH SEA," and various provinces are distinguished by different colored washes (pink, yellow, green, and blue). Extensive networks of rivers, including the Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt, are depicted with many cities and towns marked.
