A detailed, hand-colored map of Switzerland and surrounding regions. The map is divided into cantons colored in alternating shades of pink, yellow, and green. A decorative row of twenty-one coats of arms runs across the top margin below the titles, representing the thirteen cantons and their principal allies. Each coat of arms is labeled with its name and religious affiliation (Cath., Prot., or mixt.). Two text boxes are located in the bottom corners: a legend and a brief disclaimer on the left, and a detailed "Avertissement" explaining the political divisions of Switzerland on the right.

NOTICE
Although this Map is more correct than many of those which have appeared until now, for Bern is not to the south of Fribourg, and Grangis [is not] near the latter; however, those who know the Geography of this country well will still find several faults; but one can flatter oneself that little by little they will be corrected.
WARNING
The Swiss Cantons and their Allies, of which this map comprises the greater part, are not yet well known; the different Maps that have been given of them until now testify to this enough, for not only are they different, but the majority contradict each other: one has nevertheless followed them, now one, now the other, according to which one was believed the most exact. One has believed it necessary, however, to warn here that the Cantons and their Allies can be divided into three parts.
1. The Cantons, numbering thirteen, as they are found marked by their Coats of Arms at the top of this Map.
2. The Allies of the Cantons, namely: The City of Saint Gall, the Abbey of Saint Gall, the two Leagues of the Grisons, namely the Gray League, the League of the House of God, and the League of the ten Jurisdictions, which form a Body among themselves. The Republic of Valais, the Cities of Biel, Mulhouse, Geneva, and Neuchâtel, besides the Bishop of Basel.
3. The Subjects or Lands which belong to several Cantons together, namely: The Bailiwicks of Baden, Bremgarten, Mellingen, Rapperschwil, Rheineck, the four Forest Cantons, and the Bailiwicks of Thurgau, Sargans, Maienfeld, and Lugano, etc.
One will also notice that to assist the reader immediately, we have placed at the top of this Map the names of the Cantons and their principal Allies with their Coats of Arms; but we have placed above those of the Cantons one of these three marks: Cath., Prot., and mixt.: to indicate if they are of the Catholic or Protestant Religion, or of both: One has also placed the same marks above the Coats of Arms of their Allies.
