By the author Petrus Plancius, 1594.
A detailed double-hemisphere world map engraved by Jan van Doetecum for Petrus Plancius. The map features two large circular projections of the terrestrial world, flanked by two smaller celestial spheres at the top and bottom center. The corners and bottom edge are decorated with elaborate allegorical scenes representing various parts of the world.
The top left scene represents EUROPE, showing a landscape with cities, agriculture, and livestock. The top right scene represents ASIA, showing exotic animals like camels and elephants and people in ornate costumes.
The bottom of the map features four panels:
1. MEXICANA: Depicts indigenous people of North America, an armadillo, and an iguana-like creature.
2. PERUVIANA: Shows scenes of mining and local fauna like llamas in South America.
3. MAGALLANICA: Represents the southern lands with depictions of giants (Patagonians), penguins, and seals.
4. AFRICA: Features an allegorical figure of Africa riding a crocodile, surrounded by lions, elephants, and soldiers.
The map itself is filled with geographic names, sea monsters, and ships.
