A finely engraved copperplate map of Europe and the North Atlantic, including Greenland, parts of Northern Africa, and the Middle East. The map features rhumb lines originating from three prominent compass roses. Several 16th-century sailing ships (galleons) and a sea monster are depicted in the oceans. A decorative chain-link border surrounds the entire image. In the top right, there is a detailed inset map of Nova Zembla and a decorative cartouche. In the bottom left, a highly ornate cartouche provides a description of Europe.

EUROPE is separated from Asia by the Tanais Don River and the Maeotian marsh Sea of Azov, as far as the Hellespont Dardanelles. From the Strait of Hercules Strait of Gibraltar, it is marked off from Africa by the Mediterranean Sea. It is to be preferred far above all other parts of the world due to the temperate nature of its regions, the fertility of its soil, the various kinds of quadrupeds and birds, the abundance and excellence of its fruits, the presence of all the liberal and mechanical arts, and the fortitude, military prowess, and erudition of its many peoples.
