A detailed historical map of ancient Germany titled "Germaniae Veteris Typus" Model of Ancient Germany by the cartographer Abraham Ortelius, dated 1587. The map depicts Central Europe as known in antiquity, bounded by the "Oceanus Germanicus" German Ocean/North Sea and "Svevicum Mare" Suebian Sea/Baltic Sea to the north, the "Alpis" Alps and "Italiae pars" part of Italy to the south, the Rhine river and "Galliae pars" part of Gaul to the west, and the Vistula and "Sarmatiae Europaeae pars" part of European Sarmatia to the east. The landscape is densely labeled with tribal names such as Saxones Saxons, Franci Franks, Alemanni Alemanni, Suevi Suebi, and Vandali Vandals. Major geographical features include the Hercynia silva Hercynian Forest and Orcynium nemus Orcynian Grove, and the Danubius Danube and Albis Elbe rivers. The map is decorated with three ornate Renaissance-style cartouches and is enclosed in a border with longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates. Compass points "SEPTENTRIO" North, "MERIDIES" South, "OCCIDENS" West, and "ORIENS" East are noted on the borders.
