WHO Timothy was cannot be gathered more correctly from any other source than from the Apostle himself: for he describes his parents, his upbringing, his studies, his diligence, his faith, and other both efficient and effective virtues. To this the history of the Acts also agrees.
Timothy's parents
He touches upon the parents of this man in a general way in Acts 16, verses 1, 2, and 3: that he was born of a Jewish mother and a Greek father. And therefore, he was circumcised only when he was an adult. But in 2 Timothy 1, verse 5, the Apostle calls his mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois: pious and Christian matrons, by whom he was not only correctly instructed in the sacred scriptures from boyhood, but also in the true religion and faith of Christ: for in 2 Timothy 3, verse 15, the Apostle affirms that he knew the sacred scriptures from boyhood, and in chapter 1 of the same epistle, he affirms that the faith of his grandmother and mother dwells in the son as well.
