The genre is Νουθετικὸν admonitory, for it has various admonitions which he who wishes to usefully preside over the Church of Christ ought to follow. Primarily, that he may constantly defend sound doctrine, observe ευταξίαν good order, and administer everything opportunely toward all, both subordinates and those to be appointed.
The accessories are επαινετικὸν laudatory, by which he praises Timothy’s person throughout; ελεγκτικὸν reprimanding, by which he inveighs against the corrupters of true doctrine; and Προρρητικὸν predictive, by which he foretells things to come and uses the office of a Prophet, chapter 4.
Timothy must strive with the greatest care so that he may administer everything in the Ephesian Church as correctly as possible, both in defending sacred doctrine against any corruptions and in ordaining ministers, by teaching and by admonishing the people of all orders and ages opportunely, etc. Hence, a general thetic proposition is established. All who wish to preside over churches usefully must, following the example of Timothy, take care of these things most diligently, etc.
There are three main parts. The first is the greeting itself, or Title, containing the person writing, the one to whom it is written, and the prayer. The second is the instruction, which contains the main part of the epistle. Therefore, it is to be led into its own places.
