Teachers.
Ephes. 4.
they oversaw the churches and organized new ones. Pastors, however, remained in certain places, whom the Apostle and the following age call Bishops. The Evangelists seem to be the same as the teachers who carried the Gospel around. But today we properly call those Evangelists who wrote the history of Christ living on this earth. And doctores teachers is a term previously for schools; today it is left only for the minister of the Church, concerning whom it has been said elsewhere.
Author of the apostolic calling.
What hope is.
He brings forth God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ as the author of his calling to the Apostolate. God the Father is the fountain of every good, from which the eternal counsel of God concerning the saving of the elect flowed. Therefore, the Father is called Savior because he redeemed the world through his son Christ. The son, however, is called hope because we embrace him as the mediator proposed to us. Therefore, hope is the indubitable expectation of eternal life, from the mercy of God, which is transfused into us through the son, the mediator.
Doctrine from God.
Ἐπιταγὴ command/instruction is called a mandate, an instruction, signifying that the doctrine of the Apostle is handed down from God, not born among men. Therefore, the doctrine which he will put forth here cannot be anything but good. He brings the commands of a superior, that is, of God who is sending him, and to this doctrine he binds himself and Timothy. Therefore, the successors of the Apostles also ought to put forth only this doctrine, and those who recede from this ἐπιταγῇ command are to be held not as successors of the Apostles, but of apostates.
